Building economically vibrant cities

Urban areas comprise the vast majority of our economy, yet they often fail to wield equivalent political power since political boundaries, laid out centuries ago, change slowly in response to economic factors. The end result is that urban issues often fail to attract the necessary attention from policymakers. However, to keep a region’s—and a nation’s—economic engines running smoothly, policymakers need to be familiar with urban policy issues. Failing to understand critical issues such as migration and the cost of living penalizes urban areas to the detriment of everyone, but bringing these issues to the realm of public policy helps ensure that urban areas remain economically vibrant.
